The Great Woven Tee Sewing Pattern Search

Do you ever find yourself searching for the perfect basic pattern?

I do. A lot. I sometimes get an image or idea in my head and just /need/ to find the perfect pattern to bring that dream to fruition. I’m a fan of woven tees: Simple shape, but just ever so elevated from a knit tee to make me feel a bit more put together. Great for spring and summer and fall. But I think this particular obsession with finding the ‘perfect’ woven tee pattern all started with some fabric. Ahhh…beautiful fabric. The kind of thing you run across when you’re not looking to buy anything like it, but it’s just so pretty that you can’t leave the store without it. (C’mon, you KNOW what I’m talking about, right?). So I found this fabric and thought – oooh a nice basic woven tee. My first thought was the Seamwork Akita, which I’ve made a couple times already (here and here). Then I realized that the print on this particular fabric was directional, which wouldn’t work with the Akita. So, my choices were: (1) hack the Akita to make it into 2 pattern pieces instead of one, (2) try a new pattern, or (3) hack the Akita and try a new pattern…or two…or three.

Right, so I opted for (3).

Grey Ginger, Mustard Blackwood

A color conundrum

What is a grey Ginger and mustard Blackwood?

My new handmade outfit, of course!

blackwood cardigan and ginger skirt

Let’s break it down…that’s the Colette Ginger skirt in grey and black, the Blackwood cardigan in mustard yellow from Helen’s Closet, and the Lane Raglan tee in teal blue from Hey June.

Lately, I’ve found myself lamenting that most of my recent creations, especially the cool-weather appropriate ones, have been solids in neutral colors (black, grey, navy blue). Don’t get me wrong, I love solids, and I love neutrals that can easily fit into the rest of my wardrobe, but it was starting to feel a little bit drab. I need to try to strike a balance between neutrals and colors/prints in my sewing, and this colorful outfit is a good start. Continue reading “Grey Ginger, Mustard Blackwood”

Winter Sewing Plans – 2015/2016

Back in September I posted a list of my Fall Sewing plans. I had a whopping 7 items on the list! I’ve managed to finish most of them, with varying degrees of success. I LOVE my Minoru jacket and my Akita top and wear them all the time! Ditto for my new Josephine. The Moji pants get a bit less wear. The Hollyburn skirt is another great wardrobe staple – I don’t wear skirts all the time, but I do wear them a lot more than dresses. And then there’s thatĀ Sorbetto. ahem.

I enjoyed having a plan for my sewing projects, so I decided I’d do another oneĀ for winter!

Fall Sewing #5: Sad Sorbetto…and a not-meant-to-be-Beignet

This is not your usual finished project post, but rather a post about projects that just didn’t quite work…

Failure #1: My sad Sorbetto

I made this a while ago, but was so disappointed that I just hid it in a corner of my closet for a while, but now I’m ready to share.

Apologies in advance for the dark and grainy photos – it’s cold and dark outside and I just wanted to take these quick.

Not so bad? Let’s take a closer look at that neckline binding (back view). Continue reading “Fall Sewing #5: Sad Sorbetto…and a not-meant-to-be-Beignet”
